Elgin Pocket Watch – Antique Watches At Their Best
Depending on your age you may have grown up with those old films where large steam trains either rolled into a station or trudged happily along the countless miles of track. The tradition of railways and old Western films lives long in my mind and is without doubt the single cause of my fascination today with the Elgin pocket watch.
It may sound unusual for many people but I was always very curious about the whole idea of owning and using a pocket watch from as young as I can remember. There was something about the look of a golden watch and chain that simply excited me and I yearned to own one.
Only when I got older did I begin to read and understand the history of the pocket watch and their close association with the railroads. Many watches of that type started to appear including the Waltham, Hamilton, Hampden and my own particular favourite the wonderful Elgin.
The first Elgin watch was actually produced in 1867 and was known as the B.W.Raymond and the movement of this was actually sold without a case. All Elgin watches are known for their great accuracy and time keeping and I personally love the variety of design and styles that are available.
Back in the late nineteenth Century these Elgin watches would have been referred to as railroad grade and they did bring something unique to all watch manufacturing at the time. This was the fact that their watches would not be impacted by temperature change which was novel at that time. Like any expanding company more models and designs were created and they also became more affordable for many people.
The early Elgin designs were all wound up by a key and this provided what is known as an isochronous situation. In simple terms this meant that they were very accurate between the watch actually being wound up. They would all have been referred to as size 18 standard and soon after that Elgin spread their wings and produced a size 10 standard for ladies which proved very popular. It wasn’t until the late 1880s that a stem winding was introduced which we will be familiar with today.
Shortly after the First World War Elgin began to produce the wrist watch and made a lot of military watches. My interest however remained firmly in the past and with the Elgin pocket watch. The interest I know stemmed back to my childhood days and to those old films.
When I buy an Elgin watch I am actually more interested in the history of the watch rather than the actual value. The value is important of course and especially if you are a collector. You can find quite a lot out about the value and history of an Elgin pocket watch from the serial number that is on the actual movement. When you know this yo can then refer to a table and quite easily determine the potential value.
The beauty of the watch is what usually attracts me and only if I like the look of it to I start to investigate its history and then of course the value. This is very important if you are considering either a sale or purchase.
